Tabán folklore house
Tabán is the oldest residential area of Szolnok, preserved in records dating from the 1600s. As Szolnok was built at the confluence of two rivers fishing became the main activity of the people living here. The residents of Tabán were mainly poor, the neighbourhood was characterised by narrow, dark and winding streets. The ground was wet and swampy in places. Being in the immediate neighbourhood of the Artists’ Colony, it became a favourite theme for the Szolnok painters. Tabán has been demilished by now, replaced by modern houses still with narrow but atmospheric streets. One of the houses preserved, a fisherman’s lodge built in the 1930s was converted into a folklore house by the experts of Damjanich Museum where the traditional fishing tools are exhibited.
